What Weakens a Nation?

I love the Book of Mormon! Each day as I read and study from this great book I come to realize more and more what Moroni meant when he said he saw our day and abridged the book for us. I love to listen to political talk shows and keep up with the news of the day. In our world today we are surrounded by whirlwinds of political "stuff," with the possible crash of our economy, the way our elected leaders are governing themselves and our country, laws they are creating and passing etc. Needless to say, our country is weakening itself. Interesting that the very same thing happened in the Book of Mormon. Many of these phrases remind of things happening in our government today . . .
". . . war which broke our amongst ourselves . . . for those kingmen who shed much blood amongst ourselves."
" . . .there was much contention amongst ourselves . . ."
Kingmens desire for power and authority and their unwillingness to fight for the cause of freedom. . . traitors to our country.
some had forgotten the blessings that come from God.
Then I read the following: But behold, now the Lamanites are coming upon us, taking possession of our lands, and they are murdering our people with the sword, yea, our women and our children, and also carrying them away captive, causing them that they should suffer all manner of afflictions, and this because of the great wickedness of those who are seeking for power and authority, yea, even those king-men.
Does this sound like anything you've heard on the news lately?

What weakens our nation? LACK of UNITY. We quite simply need to be UNITED in the cause of freedom. What was our motto shortly after 9/11? United We Stand! May the prayer in each of our hearts be that as a nation we are united for the cause of freedom.

Great Post Sara! I know we talk about it, we both see so many timely things put out by the church. The Ensign talks about Self-Reliance, the Joseph Smith Teachings talk about finding peace and harmony among persecution. I see all the relevance in what is happening in our country. The Prophets truly do stand atop the watch tower to help us see what is coming ahead and how we need to be prepared.
